Tips For Becoming A Better Wine Buyer

Bill Daley of the Chicago Tribune serves up ten tips on buying wine. Here are his main points -- you can read the full article for details:

1. Comparison shop, but don't let price be your only guide. Sometimes it pays to spend a little more if you get a store's expert advice.
2. Great wines can cost a fortune; less-great wines from the same house can offer plenty of taste for a lot less.
3. Take advantage of wine tastings conducted by wine shops.
4. Check if your wine shop offers a customer discount card.
5. If you really, really like a wine, consider buying a case or two (you'll get a discount).
6. Don't pour that half-empty bottle down the drain. Recork it and stow it in the refrigerator. The wine should be fine the next day.
7. Shop the bargain shelves and discount bins very carefully. No wine is a bargain if it is already dead.
8. Don't go buying in big-box stores unless you know exactly what you want or are reasonably confident you can find knowledgeable sales help.
9. Experiment... Try less expensive and less-hyped wines made from other regions of the world.
10. Above all else, always remember that the wine isn't a bargain if you don't like it.

  • On Fridays in the Wall Street Journal they review different wines that sell for very reasonalbe prices. Their recommendations are very good and one of my favorite wines under $10 was from their recommendations! Enjoy
