New Year's Money Saving Resolutions: Budget Better

Resolve to better track personal spending in 2008. Seeing where the money goes can mean making adjustments to finance that backyard swimming pool or that vacation you always wanted.

Budgeting software is dominated by Intuit's Quicken and Microsoft Money. Experts agree there isn't enough of a difference between the two to stress out over which to use. But be warned, no matter which budgeting software you choose, a substantial amount of time will have to be invested in inputting and updating your budget information.

The latest basic Quicken Starter Edition 2008 for home budgets goes for $29.99. If you don't mind using last year's version, you can find the program for discounted prices. Try www.truestmarketing.com or www.amazon.com. Microsoft Money offers four versions from the most basic Money Essentials, starting at $19.99, to more complex software for more serious budget gurus.

If you aren't interested in overly complex software with endless options or spending too much time sifting through all the budgeting software offers out there, stick to the inexpensive mainstream programs.
