Holiday Gadgets (Part II: Garmin Nuvi 660)

The Garmin Nuvi 660 is another fun gadget for the frequent traveler. Like its predecessor, the Garmin Nuvi 350, it features solidly performing navigation tools, travel guides, and multimedia capabilities. However, the newer model also offers integrated Bluetooth and a larger screen.

The model features a WAAS-enabled (Wide Area Augmentation System for better position accuracy) GPS receiver, preloaded maps of North America, turn-by-turn text- and voice-guided directions, automatic rerouting, and text-to-speech functionality, which allows the unit to speak actual street names.

Users can receive directions by fastest time, shortest distance or even off-road directions. The device has a detour function for avoiding certain sections of your prescribed trip, and if you subscribe to the service, you can plug an FM traffic receiver into your cigarette lighter and receive information about upcoming congestion and road construction from Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network.

The system comes with a comprehensive database of points of interests that even allows users to search for restaurants by cuisine.

The new Bluetooth feature allows users to make and receive hands-free calls, and if the number is listed as a place of interest, you can make the phone call with a quick press of a button.

Comments

  • Get the Nuvi 200w or 250w - does just as well with navigation without the costly (and little used) bells and whistles of the 660
