Holiday Gadgets (Part I: Slingbox Solo)
Trying to figure out what to buy the family this holiday season? Or maybe you're trying to create a wish list. Here are some new gadgets that may not be essential but are a lot of fun.
Sling Media came out with the Slingbox back in 2006. The device allows you to stream TV programs from your television to your broadband enabled computer or smart phone. The advantage of this is that you can keep up with your favorite shows while traveling absolutely anywhere as long as both the box and computer are connected a cable, DSL or 3G wireless network.
The new Slingbox Solo ($180) is basically a nicer looking version of the original model. I don't recommend buying the Solo if you have the first edition, but there are a couple of perks. It has a sleeker frame, and you don't have to buy any add-ons for HD content.
The device is easy to use, and the video quality is great. Unfortunately, there is an additional charge to connect the Slingbox Solo to a cell phone or PDA, and it monopolizes the attached device during viewing.
