Behave Properly at Your Holiday Office Party

The holidays are approaching. This means that invitations to the annual office holiday party should be arriving any minute. Although the event is in fact called a "party," an office party is really more office than party. Here are some office party dos and don'ts.

1) Show up. For some, the idea of spending precious free time with the folks from the office seems like torture. However, you have to go anyway. Your absence and lack of team spirit will be noted. In a similar vein, make sure to stay at least half an hour so that it doesn't look like you came just to keep up appearances.

2) Don't assume your whole family is invited. Look at the invitation to see if it specifies that your spouse or children are invited.

3) Dress appropriately. This may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people think that the office party is the perfect opportunity to "strut their stuff."

3) Don't be a pig. Eat and drink in moderation. Hold your cup in your left hand so you can shake coworkers' hands with your right without it being cold and wet.

4) Use the party as an opportunity to meet your higher-ups. You probably don't get to interact with them on a daily basis so schmooze with them, and strengthen your business network.
