Clean Your Credit Report

Even if you don't anticipate needing to borrow money any time soon, it's a good idea to keep clean credit. Vendors or partners may decide to check your credit, and you never know when you'll be a little short on cash. Here are some steps to tidy up your report.

1) Go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get free credit reports from Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union.

2) Understand your credit report. Late payments to utilities, hospitals, credit cards, mortgages or landlords could appear. You will have three credit scores, one from each of the credit bureaus, which will range from 350 to 850. If your score is below 620, you will pay more for credit.

3) Check your credit reports for small mistakes in your personal information. A small mistake in your identification could wreak havoc on your credit. Make sure all the information listed about your late payments is accurate.

4) Call creditors and ask them to remove one time late payments. If you're a frequent customer who slipped up once, most creditors won't mind forgetting about the one time you made a mistake.

5) If you can't get an item removed, send an addendum to the credit bureaus explaining why your payment was late. Your credit score won't be affected, but lenders can at least take your reasons into consideration.
