Buy Travel Insurance

Travel often involves an upfront investment of a large sum of money. Unfortunately, circumstances sometimes prevent us from following through on our travel plans. However, with travel insurance, you can pay a small fee to eliminate that risk.

Travel insurance covers trip cancellation, lost baggage, medical coverage, emergency medical transportation or any combination of the above. The cost depends on where you're traveling, your age, your gender, and the cost of your trip. Comprehensive coverage usually costs between four and seven percent of the cost of the entire trip, with higher rates for the elderly.

You probably don't need to buy travel insurance for short trips within the country, but once you leave the borders of the United States, your medical insurance coverage stops. You don't want to have that realization in the emergency room.

Also, the more expensive your trip is and the further in advance you plan it, the better an idea it is to purchase travel insurance.

Regardless of the plan you purchase, don't forget to read the fine print, and make sure that all of the circumstances you want are covered in the policy.
