Don't Let Yourself Be Scammed (Part II)

Now you know how to detect a scam artist. However, you need to know how to deal with them. Here are some tips to stop illegal telemarketers from scamming you.

1) Put your number on a "do-not-call" registry. Call 888-382-1222 or go to www.donotcall.gov. You can also tell telemarketers not to call you. They are then not legally allowed to call you for 10 years. If your "do-not-call" rights have been violated, report the incident to the National Fraud Hotline at 800-876-7060.

2) Don't make on-the-spot decisions. Legitimate companies will wait while you check them with the Better Business Bureau or the state Attorney General's Office.

3) Don't fill out contest entry forms from fairs, malls or magazines. Scammers can easily get your name and number from them.

4) Screen your calls with caller id or an answering machine so you can avoid speaking to telemarketers entirely.

5) Hang up. If you think you're being scammed, hang up the phone. Don't worry about being polite.
