Don't Let Yourself Be Scammed

Consumers lose $40 billion a year through telemarketing fraud. A recent survey conducted for the National Consumers League found that 92 percent of adults in the United States reported receiving fraudulent telemarketing offers. The reason that these scams are so successful is that most people have difficulty differentiating between scams and legitimate offers. Here are some signs that you're being scammed.

1) If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that there is no such thing as a risk-fee investment.

2) Legitimate companies cannot legally ask for a fee upfront for a credit card, loan or to “repair” your credit. It’s also illegal to ask you to pay to "win a prize" or to claim that paying will increase your chances of winning.

3) Be wary of unsolicited calls that ask you for credit card and bank information or user names and passwords for services such as online banking and shopping.

4) Be careful with companies that pressure you too much and ask for immediate payment, particularly if they continue to call after you've made it clear that you're not interested.
