Get Organized

Keeping your home office neat can be a daunting task. However, if you're not successful, you will waste time and money looking for papers, folders and files. Here are some tips for how to stay organized.

1) Use hanging files. Don't just put your papers in a manila envelope. Hanging files enable you to more easily access your papers, and they are easier to return to the cabinet, making it more likely that you'll actually put them away.

2) Keep a clutter free desk. Take a couple of minutes at the end of the day to make sure all the papers on your desk are put away and that all files "have a home."

3) Don't let your home clutter mix into your office clutter. Take personal files and papers out of your office, and put them in a separate area.

4) Don't be afraid to throw things away. If you don't use it and aren't going to need it for taxes, get rid of it.

5) Create a filing system. Use colors or tabs or anything else that will help you find your documents more easily.

  • This is all good but unfortunately incomplete. What about using a desktop paper shredder for social security, bank account, credit card numbers, etc. to ward off those "Dumpster Divers"! What information should be saved and for how long? Your list is sadly incomplete!
