Find Your Motivation

Our biggest obstacle to success is often ourselves. No matter how hard we want to accomplish our long term goal, we find it impossible to motivate ourselves to get the work done. Here are some tips for building motivation.

1) Exercise. If you're feeling antsy, go for a walk or a jog. Exercise will keep you vibrant and healthy and help you keep the juices flowing. It can also help you clear your mind and relax when you're feeling overwhelmed.

2) Implement the "15 minute rule." Set a timer for 15 minutes, and tell yourself that you must work until the timer goes off. You'll find that in 15 minutes you will become focused and involved in your work and not need to take that break.

3) Avoid being a perfectionist. Frequently, we procrastinate on beginning a task if we are afraid of not being able to complete it perfectly.

4) Break up the project into smaller more manageable parts. Similarly, we often push off starting a project if the task seems too large or overwhelming.

5) Determine when you work best. Try to work more in the morning if you feel more productive and alert when you wake up than at night.

  • Simply terrific... I specially agree with numbers 3 and 4. Keep your big task as it's an small one, and you'll rock.
    Thanks for these tips.

  • I find that when I like what I'm doing, #2 isn't hard at all, but #3 is! Perfectionism, I believe, is a disease. It ruins relationships, it destroys lives (I'm not being melodramatic here, if you think it through you'll see what I mean: no one and no thing is ever good enough). Start with a small task and don't run your mind over the whole project because then you will see too many places where you'll fail and you won't begin at all.
