Stay Safe in Your Hotel

Traveling to unfamiliar locations can be dangerous. As we just said, ne'er-do-wells prey on the vulnerable. Obviously, you are an easy target when you're on the street snapping photos or wandering around looking lost, but you also need to take precautions when you're in the "safety" of your hotel. Here are some more travel safety tips.

1) Don't open the door to strangers. If someone claiming to be a hotel employee knocks at the door, call the front desk to verify. When you check in, you should also ask the front desk to call you before they send up employees.

2) Use all door locks, even when you're in the room. Make sure your room has an indoor viewer and a deadbolt.

3) Keep the phone number for hotel security near the phone, and make sure you know how to make outside calls.

4) Take extra precautions at night. Don't work out in the exercise room alone in general and particularly after dark. Ask a security officer to walk you to your car late at night.

5) Leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door at all times, even when you go out so that it appears someone is inside.

6) Make sure to know the locations of emergency exits, elevators, stairs and public phones.

  • I am not really for sure if the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door at all times is the greatest idea in the world. Often times when you are at a hotel all of the rooms are not reserved. Hanging this sign on your door might attract extra attention to your room that someone is there.
