Make the Most of Returned Items

Customers will return merchandise for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the reason, the business bears the expense. However, you don't have to let the returns collect dust in a warehouse. Here are some ways that you can get some money back on returned items.

1) Create a firm and obvious return policy. Post it near the register and on receipts, and make sure that it explicitly states a time frame for which returns will be accepted and what the customer will receive.

2) Inspect the product, and decide whether it can be resold. Is it the original packaging? Have the tags been removed? Separate items that can be resold from damaged goods, and put the unused items back on the shelf.

3) Talk to your vendors about their return policy. They often offer credit for returned goods. You will probably have to ship the items at your own expense, but once they receive the goods, they will issue you a credit on your next purchase.
