Be Well Equipped on the Road

You're a gadget freak and you must go on the road to some conference or other, or even to your in-laws for the weekend. Be equipped! Here are some items the geeks at Crunch Gear feel are essential to have while traveling:

1. Cables: FireWire and USB 2.0 cables (one square plug for printers and scanners, and one miniplug for portable cameras and MP3 players). A Y-cable (2 female 3.5-mm to one male 3.5-mm) for using two sets of headphones from a single audio source, and one minijack-to-minijack audio cable. They recommend that iPod users include an extra iPod cable.

2. Adapters: AC-to-USB (5V) wall plug. This will let you charge portable devices without having to plug them into your laptop’s USB ports. Also: USB card reader, eighth-inch to quarter-inch headphone adapter, quarter-inch to eighth-inch headphone adapter, dual-mono plug for plugging in headphones to airplane audio sources, 2.5-mm to 3.5-mm audio.

Music: Don't forget your MP3 player. Bring regular earbuds for when you want to hear what’s going on around you. CrunchGear recommends Creative Zen Aurvana for noisier environs. We agree with the need to bring small speakers for hotel rooms or the guest bedroom at your in-laws. Crunch Gear favors Creative’s TravelDock 900.

What else? How about a portable USB hub, battery charger, and wireless Internet access adapter. Next time: cool bags in which to shlep all this gear.
